1995 to 1999, in just five years, a total of 263 women were newly diagnosed with Breast Cancer around the Pottstown Landfill. Among young adult women the most frequently diagnosed cancer, by far, is breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Links to Pottstown Landfill’s Air Pollution

Why are breast cancer statistics so much HIGHER around the Pottstown Landfill than the rest of the nation and tri county?

Ø Radiation and Chlorine Chemicals are Linked to Breast Cancer. Pottstown Landfill continuously emits both.

Ø 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, Pottstown Landfill emits into our air, potent cancer causing chemicals linked to breast cancer. That’s continuously added to all other risks for breast cancer.

Radiation – Since at least 1983, Pottstown Landfill has dumped massive amounts of radioactive wastes. These wastes have contaminated the rest of the waste in the landfill. Radiation is escaping into community air with the Pottstown Landfill gas that is produced from the radioactive wastes. Ozone is documented to intensify the cancer causing effects of radiation. Since massive amounts of Ozone are produced at the Pottstown Landfill, the risks of residents from the low levels of radiation which are emitted from the landfill are intensified.

The National Academy of Science Report in 1990 (BIER) says there is NO safe dose of radiation; that continuous exposure to low-level radiation can adversely affect human cells the same as one large dose.

Chlorine Chemicals and the Breast Cancer Connection – So what does chlorine have to do with the breast cancer epidemic? Plenty! Chlorine is the common link in many of the world’s most notorious environmental poisons such as dioxin, DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange and heptachlor. While women across the nation and tri county are exposed to massive kinds of chlorine chemicals, women around the Pottstown Landfill have the added unnecessary breast cancer risks from potent cancer causing chlorine chemicals, such as vinyl chloride, continuously emitted with Pottstown Landfill’s air pollution. Massive chlorine based products and residue end up in the Pottstown Landfill, where they break down, then get into the gas and escape into our air. Those chemicals emitted into our air are inhaled and absorbed through our skin. All of this can be documented.

Dioxin – One of the most potent carcinogens, can affect cells at parts per trillion. Dioxin stores in the body fat, and does not leave the body, except through nursing. Babies are born with dioxins in their bodies. Women everywhere are at their dioxin body dose limit from food and other sources, but women around the Pottstown Landfill are at far greater risk from Pottstown Landfill’s air pollution. EPA says people living near sources of dioxin can be at far greater risk from dioxin through inhalation.

Combustion of chlorine chemicals produces dioxins as an inevitable by-product. Dioxins are emitted from five full time combustion sources at Pottstown Landfill. How much dioxin? NO ONE KNOWS. Considering it can have adverse affects at parts per trillion, and that we are already at our body burden, the exact amount which is emitted from the Pottstown Landfill, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, is not critical. It is too much, whatever the amount.
